Just think of your credit card, you may have Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc. but you can use your card at any stores. With OpenID, Google, Yahoo, AOL, etc. are the providers and we're the store. We don't know your username or password, we just send you over to your provider and let them verify that you own the account.
